Subscription Concerts for Classical Music Lovers
The regular subscription cycle for classical music lovers in Opava began in 1946 as the so called Music Wednesdays organized first by Cyril Vymětal and then by Emílie Bednařiková and Věra Slámová in cooperation with Jiří Čech and Tomáš Thon. Since 1996 the ten-part cycle of chamber, organ and orchestral music has been prepared by Petr Rotrekl and Petr Hanousek. The ambition of the concert cycle is to offer extraordinary music experiences in the most attractive and acoustically attractive halls in the city – Minorite Monastery, Cultural House Na Rybníčku, St. Václav’s Church, Church of the Holy Spirit, Co-cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Silesian Theatre, and Hradec nad Moravicí Castle. The organizers and dramaturges of the cycle have established cooperation with prominent music festivals – Leoš Janáček International Music Festival, St. Wenceslas Music Festival, the competition Beethoven’s Hradec, or Petr Eben International Organ Competition – and can therefore present outstanding artists and ensembles from the Czech Republic and abroad. The subscribers and classical music lovers can enjoy Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, classical or romantic music, but also the 20th century compositions with folk, jazz, or alternative elements. The concerts occasionally include films, literary readings, or lectures. Among the performers also young musicians and winners of international music competitions. The concert season starts in September and ends in June of the following year.
